Lambley imported this, to my mind the most desirable of all Bergenias, from the now defunct UK nursery, Hannays of Bath. Bergenia ciliata has round hairy leaves about 12 to15cm in diameter, a bit like a giant African Violet in effect, and sprays of large flowers, white aging to pink. In our garden it is herbaceous but it is evergreen here if we grow it in a warm sheltered spot. A rare plant in Australia because it is so slow to propagate and so breathtakingly beautiful that any examples offered are quickly snapped up.
