Tulipa whittallii
If I could grow only one wild tulip this would be it. It has made a wonderful display in the dry garden here at Lambley for 15 years, increasing well each year. The burnt orange flowers are held on 35cm tall stems well above the patch of Euphorbia myrsinites through which it grows. It is found growing wild in south-western Turkey near Izmir, the ancient Greek city Smyrna. This bulb always sells out and there is some beautiful film of it in the Dry Garden Spring DVD. We planted these bulbs roughly 25cm apart originally.
